Original Description:
During the regiment's first battle at Ft. Donaldson, Osborn and his men became separated from the rest of the division and missed the battle.  His officers and enlisted men wrote a letter asking him to resign, which he ignored and later he was promoted to full Colonel.  Sound familiar?Letter is as follows:                             ...;            Sullivan  Sept 23, '62Dear Sir, The friends of Voorhees here are deceiving our people by representing that he voted for raising volunteers, and calling out the militia, and to pay them fifteen dollars per month, but withholding the fact that he voted against all revenue bills to enable the government to carryout these measures.  I have searched in vain for the journals of congress here.  Can you not procure and send the journals to me by mail or express immediately - or send me correct and full contracts from the journals, that I may lay the truth before the people. The Old Post Union has gone down its proprietor gave to the army but the "Stars and Stripes" will float upon the breeze in Old Sullivan again, from next Friday onward, as long as the friends of the Union will enable B.W. Osborn and myself to pay contingent expenses.                                                                        In much haste, your friend                                                                       J.W. OsbornNote:  Voorhees was a U.S. Senator from Indiana at the time, and not well liked. The letter was set to J.O. Jones who was the postmaster in Terra Haute, Ind. at the time.
