Jones Esq, Terre Haute Indiana (postmaster at the time)Dear Sir, In view of the approaching state elections (upon which hangs the political salvation of Indiana), I would humbly suggest the propriety of having as many Indiana Soldiers transported into the state a few days before the Election as possible. There is a large number of Indiana men about hospitals in Ky. here, at Lexington, Camp Nelson and elsewhere, not one of which, but have expressed a wish to vote for O.P. Morton if they could get a chance. My character of Clerk brings me into contact with a great many of these men and I have taken some pains to ascertain their particular bias in this matter, and am satisfied that almost without exception they would vote the full Union ticket. These men can be excluded from duty long enough to vote in their different precincts, and some one should be appointed with proper authority to gather them up, provide transportation and see that they are in the state at the proper time. Something of this kind must be done, as the State of Indiana will be in danger of being carried by the copperheads. I will be a sad day for Indiana when Moe McDonald becomes her governor.John T.
