DescriptionI have recently had theprivilege of purchasing several pieces of pottery directly from renownedpotter, Walter Fleming. While some pieces may have similarities, each areone-of-a-kind unique pieces from his collection. Walter Fleming was born in1937 and began potting in 1986. He studied under Burton “B. B.” Craig, thewell-known Catawba Valley potter who shared with Walter the traditional CatawbaValley techniques of forms and glazes that is realized in this jug. Walter digs...his own clay on his property off the historic Third Creek in Iredell County, North Carolina; a rich, deep red Carolina clay. An interesting fact aboutWalter is that he turns his pots counter-clockwise due to being left handed. This is not true of all south-paw potters. This is a wonderful Walter P. Fleming Folk ArtPottery Decorated SWIRL Face Jug! It has a rich two-tone shiny BLUE and cream colorswirl glaze with cobalt blue pupil eyes. BLUE SWIRL JUGS ARE RARE. Also note the counterclockwise swirl design –that’s what makes this South Paw swirl jugs so very special! This jug is alsodecorated with the classic dot, straight and wavy line decoration around theshoulder which adds a lot of character. I was told by Walter himself that heuses a spoon to create the wavy design, a fork to create the lines and the endof an old wooden spool of thread to create the dots. Walter always employs china teeth; this jughas 5 teeth. This great jug measures approximately 8 ¾” tall and is 5 ½” wideear to ear. It is signed Walter P. Fleming on the bottom and his signaturethumb print is at the base of the handle. While Walter has made a few of theseswirl face jugs, each is different in their own way. This spectacular face jugis in excellent condition. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. This is agreat jug and would be a perfect addition to your collection!
