Original Description:
4 pg. letter, approx. 5" x 8", dated at Rutland, NY, Dec. 18, 1862, from Volney Olney, to his brother, B.A. Olney, at Hartford, Van Buren Co., Michigan. Includes the original cover (envelope) with black SOUTH RUTLAND/N.Y. cds postmark with manuscript "Dec 20" date within, and with #65 3c rose with pen cancel. Great content from this staunch Democrat, who hates Lincoln and the Republicans, noting that he would rather a son of his die a natural death "than to be slain to liberate th...ose infernal niggers", and noting that another of his brothers is for Lincoln and the war, and "is sure the slave will be free",   but the writer, referring to the Emancipation Proclamation, which was to go into effect two weeks after this letter was written, notes that his brother "thinks old Abe can liberate all the niggers by the stroke of his pen. I think he will find his mistake in time". More interesting content. Includes: "Simeon Oaks died last Sep., sick about two weeks. I would like to have him lived to see his party triumphed, he being a strong democrat. I was grieved to hear the death of you son Luman, and should been more so to have heard that he was slain on the battle field. Seth has sent his son Darwin and son in law Mr. Whittaker to the war. I would rather a son of mine would die a natural death than to be slain to liberate those infernal niggers. Brother Seth thinks it is the most holy war that ever happened. He is sure the slave will be free. He thinks old Abe can liberate all the niggers by the stroke of his pen. I think he will find his mistake in time. We can hardly find a Republican since election, we electing a white Governor, it has put down the cry of traitor here.I would like to have you write soon as you get this. I send my best wishes to yourself and family. Let us all remain true to the Constitution and the Union.Yours with respects, Volney Olney"Accompanied by a 4 pg. letter from Alice Olney, (Volney's daughter) to her uncle, dated Dec. 15, 1862. The envelope is torn at lower left. The letter is Fine.COMBINED SHIPPING FOR MULTIPLE ITEMS. [DD #2-13]
