For sale is this wonderful, Swiss-made Bernina 1005 machine. A great, basic machine that can do straight stitch, zig zag stitch, blend hem stitch and some decorative stitches and has a 6-step buttonhole function. It also has the option for free-motion quilting as it has the capability to drop the feed dogs. It has two spool pins, great for using twin needles. It has adjustable stitch length and width and adjustable needle position.
Included with the machine are:-The original canvas ...dust cover-The foot pedal/power cord-Four metal bobbins-The original user’s manual-Five presser feet: #1 (universal foot), #3 (buttonhole foot), #4 (zipper foot), #5 (blind hem foot), and #12 (bulky overlock foot/piping foot)
This machine is in fantastic vintage condition. It has a couple of small cosmetic scratches and is slightly yellowed, but otherwise appears perfect. It works wonderfully and produces beautiful stitches, and has lots of little features that you don’t find in cheaper modern machines.
The only issues I’ve had with this machine are:-When you drop the feed dog, it takes some finagling to get it back up. This might be a hassle if you switch often between the two settings, but otherwise I didn’t find it to be an issue.-The 6-step buttonhole takes some practice to get right and is definitely not as easy as an automatic buttonhole stitch.-This machine works wonderfully for light- to medium-weight fabrics, but cannot handle multiple layers of heavy fabric. That is ultimately the reason I am selling this machine, since I sometimes sew with heavy-weight fabrics.-It can be hard to find the vintage Bernina feet and they are much more expensive than non-Bernina feet. If you’re someone who likes having a lot of specialized feet, that will be a significant investment in itself.-It does not come with a table, just a free arm.
Overall, though, it is a great machine! I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a well-made but basic machine.
I purchased this machine two years ago online from a sewing machine store that sells refurbished vintage machines. I had it serviced about one year ago and it came back with a clean bill of health. I have since purchased a new machine that better handles heavyweight fabric, and this one has been sitting in my sewing area with the dust cover ever since.
