Original Description:
You are bidding on a rare knight’s head militia officer’s sword dating from the 1850’s.The blade is straight, double-sided with a spear point and a central fuller running from the ricasso to an area within 2.25 inches of the point. Blade surface is dark with scattered mottling throughout and heavier oxidation with minor pitting to base near counter guard. Surface oxidation, darkening present across entire blade.  Some slight pitting near counterguard.  Both ed...ges are free of nicks. Both sides of the blade are etched with a fine scrollwork design that have different patriotic motifs. One side has a spread winged federal eagle holdings a ribbon in its beak, with the hand engraved phrase, "E. Pluribus Unum."  The opposite side has a scrollwork that comes to a bed of grass with a panoply of flags rising above it. Etching is faded in places, but the hand cut accents remain quite strong.Heavy all brass hilt has a wonderful very detailed knight’s head pommel with a thick crest.  This sword is missing the chain that runs from the knights head to the winged eagle countergaurd.  The eagle sits atop a federal shield.  This guard is the same on both sides.  Grip is entirely comprised of hand carved ribbed bone.  Grip has a two minor chips that seat against the pommel.  Where the top of the grip meets the pommel cap there is some wear. Grip and guard have just the slight wiggle.  Pommel is very secure and firm.Brass scabbard is nicely marked on reverse near throat “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE /MASS.” Throat does not appear to be present, though the top of the scabbard is crimped tightly, which leaves. Upper mount has leafed scroll decoration with two rings while the lower mount has the same with one ring. Thin drag wraps around the edge of the scabbard.  Bottom of drag is a simple brass reinforcement.  Scabbard shows attractive patine, though it has several minor dents consistent with use and one large "kink" at both sides, center of scabbard.  All the brass on the sword has a matching dark patina. That combined with the wonderful decoration of the flying eagle counterguard and knight’s head pommel combine to make this a very attractive item.
