SMALL EARLY 19TH CENTURY VERSE & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY BESSY HOWITT AGED 8 - 1816

Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Bessy Howitt aged 8 - 1816. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letter, numbers and border patterns with a crown at the end of the second row and a diamond, heart and two crowns at the end of the third. The middle section of the linen contains the following short verse

The verse is underlined with a swirling red border with Bessy's details and the date of August ye 19 1816 beneath. The quotation Prepare to meet thy God are stitched across the bottom edge with a small floral motif to their right side.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small faint mark. The colours of the thread are good with some small areas of stitch loss and minor bleeding to some of the stitch work. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Bessy first stitched it.Measures 10 1/2" across x 10 1/4"
