EARLY 19TH CENTURY VERSE & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY JANE SOPHIA GARN AGED 10 - 1813

Early 19th century linen and brown wool work sampler by Jane Sophia Garn aged 10 - 1813. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains the following verse
Dear Saviour, oh: what ails this heartSure 'tis of stone, it cannot smartNor yet relent the death of theeWhose death alone could ransom meCan I behold thy pains so ...greatThy dying sighs, thy bloody sweatCanst thou pour forth such streams for meAnd I not drop one tear for thee
Jane's details and the date of 1813 are stitched in the lower section with a border pattern to the left and right of the date.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some small dark stains and an area of damage above the word ransom. The brown of the thread is good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Jane first stitched it. Measures 7 3/4" x 16 1/2"
I AM ALSO SELLING ANOTHER SAMPLER ACQUIRED AT THE SAME TIME AS JANE'S. IT IS BY ELIZABETH MARTHA GARNE AND WAS FINISHED IN 1807 WHEN SHE WAS JUST SEVEN YEARS OLD. DESPITE THE LACK OF AN E ON JANE'S SURNAME I THINK IT IS LIKELY THAT THE GIRLS WERE SISTERS.
