EARLY 19TH CENTURY VERSE & ALPHABET SAMPLER BY MARGARET HODGSON AGED 9 - 1822

Early 19th century sampler by Margaret Hodgson aged 9 - 1822. Worked in silk on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with Margaret's name, whilst the middle section contains the following verse intersected by small examples of border pattern
When wealth to virtuous hands is giv'nIt blesses like the dews of Heav'nIt hears the or...phan's cries And wipes the tears from a widow's eyes
Margaret's details and the date of 1822 are stitched beneath the verse which are underlined with a deep strawberry border followed by a smaller geometric border running along the bottom edge. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker down the centre with a few small stains. The colours of the silks are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it.Measures 12 1/4" across x 12 1/2"
