A fine and very rare c1855 Eoff & Shepard silver Chinese decorated pitcher.
The firm was listed in New York from 1852-1861.Examples in major collections.An identical shaped tea service, without the Chinoiserie decoration displayed inthe Museum of the City of New York.
The jug is in slender pear shape with beautifully detailed scenes of Chinese manseated in garden holding exotic bird,... another man with parasol, Chinese maiden playingshamisen and a second enjoying a flower, all within lush tree and foliage.
Cover retains the original leaf and flower pierced vine finial.Naturalistic branch spout and handle with entwined flower and vine.Atop flower framed pierced turned leaf vine tip feet united byoverlapping satin surface chased leaves.
Hand engraved "Robertson" to one side.
Hallmarked as shown, well struck.
This rare c1855 Eoff & Shepard Chinoiserie silver ewer is 7 3/4 inches tall
and just under 17 standard ounces.
In very fine condition.
Interior clean as if little used.
Rich silver patina, and retains original detail.
