1 pg. printed State of Vermont Militia appointment - (blank form, not filled in) - signed by Governor Jonas Galusha and by the Secretary to the Governor and Council, R.C. Mallary. Dates from circa 1816-1819, during Galusha's 2nd term as Governor, based on the closing text in the document, indicating a date in the "forty" something anniversary of the Independence of the United States. Measures approx. 14" x 8-1/4". (wider than can be scanned all at once, I scanned it in 2 phot...os, so as to see entire left and rights sides)A scarce autograph of JONAS GALUSHA, (1753-1834); Served as a Captain in the Green Mountain Boys during the Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Bennington on Aug. 16, 1777 (his brother was a Colonel in the Green Mountain Boys); In 1778, he married the daughter of Thomas Chittenden, Governor of the independent Republic of Vermont; Governor of Vermont, 1809-1813 and 1815-1820. Also signed by the Secretary of the Governor and Council, "R.C. Mallary" - Rollin Carolus Mallary, (1784-1831), who served as Sec. of the Gov. & Council, 1809-1812, and 1815-1819; In U.S. Congress, 1820-1831, dying in office at age 47.Bold heading: "BY HIS EXCELLENCY JONAS GALUSHA, ESQUIRE, CAPTAIN-GENERAL, GOVERNOR, AND COMMANDER IN CHIEF, IN AND OVER THE STATE OF VERMONT". Paper seal affixed over wax at top left, with an embossed illustration of the Vermont State Seal. Small nick in at left edge. Normal folds. Fine.[JM #82]
