OH MY!! What a week we've had cutting stone in the shop! This amazing treasure is the latest world class collectible from the Sticks in Stones Lapidary rockshop! This is one of the most unusual finds from the Hampton Butte site that I can recall seeing! It's a translucent agate log cast with one of the most gorgeous displays of green "moss" filaments I've ever seen in any agate anywhere! The wood texture was still visible on the o...utside edges of this log cast which formed in a perfectly shaped hardened mud void after the log rotted away before it could be petrified. Some of the cuts revealed green arcs of a mineral that formed as a half sphere in the side of the cast. When the saw intersected these they actually looked a lot like malachite in the stone! This slab was cut from the center of that cast and polished to a liquid clear, mirror perfect finish to reveal the 3-D mossy filaments, sprays, agate fortifications and other features revealed in the highly translucent agate!! The depth and color of this mirror polished show piece is just stunning. It's a truly unique and beautiful piece that has a fascinating if mysterious story to tell - good luck! Arguably one of the most well known and interesting petrified wood deposits in Oregon is the "Green Wood" deposit at Hampton Butte in Central Oregon. This wood is more jasperized than agatized and is often more of a cast than a wood replacement, though exceptions to both of these are certainly found. The logs are more often than not fractured, but the colors are unmatched anywhere else. The dominant color is green - REALLY GREEN! Green in more shades than my weed infested garden! These shades can be accented with white, yellow, red, orange and other classic jasper tones - but green is what it's all about if you're looking for a good Hampton Butte specimen. Not every piece will polish well, and they don't all look an awful lot like wood, but a good specimen is tough to beat and a must have for any serious petrified wood collection - or even if you just happen to love green! This big specimen is kind of tough to get a good photo of, but the color is pretty true on my monitor. It's a very green stone with several distinct shades of green in the gemmy face. There are a lot of other shades as well, including a lot bright white quartz veins that really set the green off - a gorgeous color combination to be sure. It's got a pretty high agate concentration and took a nice polish - something we work hard to produce on every stone we sell! I don't see a lot of this wood for sale any more, but it really is one of the more brilliantly colored specimens you'll find in our great state and something you will undoubtedly appreciate most when you see it in person. A quick squirt of Windex will safely wash away finger prints sure to develop when admirers instinctively touch the surface to see if it's wet - how else could it be so shiny!!? This is a pretty large specimen. It measures about 3 1/4" x 3" wide on the mirror polished face and is cut at a slight taper that goes from about 0.40" to 0.55" thick. Weight is about 0.28 lbs.
