Original USMC WW II M1 Garand bayonet & scabbard, Iwo Jima - VERY GOOD PLUS. Condition is Used.
CHECK ALL PHOTOS FOR DETAILS AND CONDITION! THIS BAYONET, ACCORDING TO THE SELLER I BOUGHT IT FROM YEARS AGO STATED THAT "SHE GOT IT FROM THE SON OF A U.S.M.C. ARTILLERY SERGEANT WHO CARRIED IT ON IWO JIMA. HIS NAME WAS SGT. EDWARD JOHNSTON. HE CARRIED IT WHEN HE WAS A PFC. IN BATTERY C, 1ST BATALLION, 14TH MARINE REGIMENT, 4TH MARINE DIVISION. HIS ID # WAS 894807. HIS UNIT WAS BASED ...IN MAUI, HAWAII BEFORE BEING DEPLOYED TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC."
The bayonet was manufactured in 1943, it has a 10" blade and is 16' overall.
Blade - 90% blued steel - no pitting - 3/8' wide fuller on both sides Markings: top left below crossguard (SEE PIC.) flaming bomb flanked on left w "U" & on right w "S"- above that is "U" & "C" which designates the maker as Utica Cutlery, Utica, NY - NO RUST
Crossguard - button lock (secures to scabbard) works well - still mostly blued w some very minor scratching & raw spots - NO RUST
Grips - heavy black plastic (Bakelite) secured to tang w one round headed slot screw w round nut on opposite side (both head & nut are recessed into grips - some scratching and dings present on grips but no cracks or nicks
Pommel - contoured birdshead - spring operated catch embedded in lug groove working well - Marking: a small "H" engraved on tang just before the bayonet groove - approx. 50% blued - NO RUST
Scabbard - M7 olive drab fiberglass w gray sheet steel top mount (at throat) - Marking: flaming bomb w blocked lettered "U.S." inside bomb - minor scratching very small dent on rear - NO RUST
Scabbard Body - scratched & a few dings on front - back in better condition Marking: Victory Plastics logo over "14" at top rear below top mount - small drilled hole tip in rear *SEE PIC.) Heavy wire belt double hook for ammo belt in great condition - NO RUST
