Small early/mid 19th century silk work c.1840. Worked in silk on a close weave gauze, this little silk work is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The gauze is stitched with a rural backdrop of a grassy hillock surrounded by trees and shrubs. There is a young maiden sitting on the grass wearing a blue bodice, full skirt and flowers in her hair. Her left arm is leaning on bird cage, its door open, whilst its colourful occupant is standing on a small perch she is ho...lding in her right hand. The eyes of both the maiden and the bird are worked in black beads. The backing gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places. The silk work is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The silk work is contained within a mid/late 20th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with their age.Measures 8" x 10 1/2" (sight size) and 11 1/2" x 14" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SILK WORK ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
