Small late 19th century silk work - c.1890 - 1900. This little silk work is completely charming with fine quality paint and stitch work throughout. The backing silk has been painted with a cloudy blue sky which frames a winsome scene of a rural setting in which a young woman is carving an initial, possibly of a suitor, into the bark of a tree. Her pet spaniel watches attentively from the stone pedestal he is sitting on.The silk work is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, b...ut the colours of the silk and paints appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The silk work is contained within its seemingly original good quality gilt frame with later gold card mat. The frame is in good condition retaining much of its original gilding. There is the odd scratch and scuff mark and the outer bead detailing is missing from each of the bottom corners. The glass has obviously been replaced at some point in the 20th century as it is non-reflective and I presume the gold card mat was added at that time.Measures 4 1/4" x 5 3/4" (sight size) and 11" x 12 3/4" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - DESPITE THE GLASS BEING NON REFLECTIVE, THERE WAS STILL SOME GLARE WHEN I WAS TAKING THE PHOTOGRAPHS. AS SUCH, ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SILK WORK ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
