Mid 19th century silk work picture c.1840 or slightly later. Worked in both wool and silk, this little needlework is just delightful with fine quality stitch and paint work throughout. The scene is a winsome one in which a young girl is sitting on a settle bench situated in what looks like a barn, her pet cat lying contentedly at her feet. The girl's face, hair, shoulders and hands are finely painted, a fineness which is also reflected in the quality of the stitch work in her silk dres...s. The vista outside the barn depicts swathes of grass which lead to dense chenille work foliage with just a glimpse of a shuttered window peeking through suggesting a building beneath. The visible backing silk has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the painted silk is in good condition with no splits etc. The needlework is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the thread appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a very small area of stitch loss just to the side of the cat's paws. The needlepoint is contained within its seemingly original rosewood frame with gilt slip and hanging ring. Both the frame and slip are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age. Measures 6 1/2" x 8 1/4" (sight size) and 12 1/2" x 13 3/4" PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SILK WORK ITSELF.
