Mid/late 19th century sampler. The gauze has a few blank areas on it which suggests that this sampler may not have been finished, plus it is neither signed or dated. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 give or take a few years either way. Worked by an anonymous hand in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat-ish stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters, whil...st the middle section is stitched with a delightful two storey red house with a large rose pot to its left side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a husband and wife standing below the house, the wife has a bird perched on her hand and a small dog standing nearby. The husband has a tree pot and jug to his side whilst the wife has a flower pot and jug next to her.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of staining and visible remnants of old glue and paper around the edges from where it has been folded and glued onto a backing board. The colours of the wool are good with some later over stitching to the curve of the P in the last row of letters. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the gauze. As can also be seen from the photographs, apart from the selvedge edge on the top of the gauze, all the other three edges are frayed.Measures 16 1/2" x 12" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
