Mid/late 19th century sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on a close weave cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central fruit tree with a peacock perched on top, a flower bush and small floral motif to his left and right. The branches of the tree have a fruit basket on either side, whilst its trunk h...as a small floral motif on each side followed by a tree, each with a dog and deer on either side of its trunk. The lower section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with a two storey red house which has a gate and picket fence to the front and a fruit tree on either side. The whole piece is then surrounded by an arcaded floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining and a few very small, dark marks. The colours of the wool are good with the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some fraying. Measures 12 1/4" x 11" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
