This is a Japanese WWll Army officer`s sword in mountings. The blade is signed "Minamoto Yoshichika 源良近", dated "Showa Go-nen Juichi-gatsu hi (a day Nov., 1930) 昭和五年十一月日", shinogi-zukuri shape with bohi engravings, before WWll time period made blade. Yoshichika`s real name is Mori Kyusuke, lived in Shiba, Tokyo, made swords during the Taisho and early Showa periods as a Gendai smith. Most ...of the swords carried by the Imperial Guards were made by Yoshichika, listed in John Slough`s book page 196 and rated 1.5 Million yen. The blade is hand forged, in old polish, shows fine scratches but no rust, no stain and in good condition. The temper line is wavy gunome-choji temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep temper at the point. Forging grain is tight ko-itame hada, no openings, no blister and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend, no nick, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The scabbard is glossy lacquered heavy metal scabbard, no lacquer loss, no dent, no bend and in excellent condition for that age. The handle is tight fit with silver family mon, tsuka-ito wrapping is no cut, no loose also in good condition. Lock mechanism works fine. Tsuba and seppa are matched number 36 stamped. It came with orange-red/brown colonel grade sword tassel, shows minor scratches but no cut, no fade and in good condition. It measures 28+1/4" tip to the guard, 27+3/8" cutting edge, 1+3/16" width, 6.5 mm thickness at the notch and 40+5/8" in mountings.
