Antique Berlin Woolwork Hand - Painted PAIR Charts Pattern 19th Century

A PAIR of charts for a Back and Seat of a Victorian Ladies chair in a truly stunning design, depicting an exotic mix of Iris (which have been charted in such a way that they look three dimensional), and Cacti with their sumptuous red flowers, brilliantly bright stamens and leaves, complete with their prickly edges. All exhibited in still vibrant shades of paint. I have never seen any other Berlin charts exhibiting quite this exotic style and to have a matching ...pair is truly a rare find. Unfortunately, age and much handling has taken it's toll on these two charts affecting their condition, but they are still rare Collectors pieces and deserve a place in any serious collection. A rare set of matching charts produced in the 19th century.

Description - Hand-painted charts onto grey parchment.
Condition - The chart area in both charts is, for the most part, in good condition having vibrant colours still intact. As is common, the white paint used in the Iris flowers has disintegrated and rubbed very thin in these areas (see my close-up photo) although the symbols beneath are still to be seen. The surrounding parchment is age discoloured and badly stained in some areas and also both of the charts have, in the past, been folded in quarters and these folds are evident - probably because the charts are large. There are other old folds and some tears these can be seen in the black painted background quite easily although these have not resulted in too much paint loss over the design area. The edges of the parchment have been bound and stitched with tape in the past, and this has been very effective in holding the parchment together. Both charts have two maker's seals impressed in the lower edges giving these charts authenticity. It is very important to please study my photos to check condition of these charts before bidding. Please note - my last photo shows these two designs hand-stitched in wools - this is included for illustration purposes only and are not included in this sale.

Date - This designer produced these charts during the period 1834-1862.Note: These charts have been kept flat in protective sleeves for safe-keeping, and they will be shipped in these to arrive safely.
These charts were produced in the nineteenth century, mainly in Berlin (but also in Vienna, Dresden, Nurenberg and Paris) by Companies who commissioned artists to paint an original design, which was outlined onto parchment with printed grids. Hand-drawn symbols were added to the squares to denote the shade changes, and the shaded colours painted by hand onto these squares for the needlewomen of the time to stitch onto canvas or linen. This was before the use of electricity and the painters had to use magnifiers, sometimes under candle-light to painstakingly paint the squares accurately. Many stitched examples can still be seen in grand houses throughout England and Europe, and of course in museums.
These surviving charts, in good condition, are now rare (most were tattered after use and destroyed) and are mostly to be found in specialised museums and private collections. Many are framed to make beautiful pictures.
I have collected these beautiful designs for many years and I have stitched some of them in wool onto canvas in the traditional way, but it is now time for me to dissolve and dispose of my collection. I will be listing others for sale, so if you are interested please add me to your Watch List.
