Antique Berlin Woolwork Hand - Painted Large Chart Pattern 19th Century

A large and pretty hand-painted Berlin chart depicting a bouquet of mixed flowers including Lilies, Roses, Passion Flowers Marigolds and others in a variety of colours and shades. This would have been a more valuable piece if someone, during it's long life, had not torn off the top 10% section of the chart (it was probably folded down be cause it is a large chart). It is however, an original hand-painted Berlin chart which I purchased over 30 years ago just beca...use I loved the abundance of flowers in the design and the colours which are still bright. The form is typical of the period and I do hope that someone will appreciate the artwork as much as I have.

Description - Hand-painted floral chart onto cream parchment.
Condition - The chart is in fairly good condition as the paint colours are still bright and vivid in places, although some areas, especially the white and pale colours are discoloured with age - see my close-up photos. Apart from the top section having been torn off, the parchment has been trimmed close to the outer grid line, and has some tears on the top, left side and lower edge, some of which have been reinforced on the back with masking tape. Please study my photos to check condition of this chart before bidding.
Size - Design grid area (width x height) 12.25 x 11 ins. / 31 x 28 cm (actual) The chart would probably have been square ie. an additional 1.25 ins / 3 cm extra on the height - which part is missing)

Date - This designer produced these charts during the period 1837-1883.
These charts were produced in the nineteenth century, mainly in Berlin (but also in Vienna, Dresden, Nurenberg and Paris) by Companies who commissioned artists to paint an original design, which was outlined onto parchment with printed grids. Hand-drawn symbols were added to the squares to denote the shade changes, and the shaded colours painted by hand onto these squares for the needlewomen of the time to stitch onto canvas or linen. This was before the use of electricity and the painters had to use magnifiers, sometimes under candle-light to painstakingly paint the squares accurately. Many stitched examples can still be seen in grand houses throughout England and Europe, and of course in museums.
These surviving charts, in good condition, are now rare (most were tattered after use and destroyed) and are mostly to be found in specialised museums and private collections. Many are framed to make beautiful pictures.
