Mid/late 19th century needlepoint picture c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The background of the gauze is stitched in a rich russet shade with an expanse of grass in the foreground surrounded by trees, flowers and shrubs. An impressive looking Springer spaniel is pacing across the grass with a stretch of water in the distance behind him.The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse..., but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a split approximately one inch in length on the top edge of the stitch work. The needlepoint is contained in a good quality mahogany frame with gilt slip, possibly original to the piece. Both are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age. The penultimate photo shows a piece of wood missing on the right side edge of the frame which is visible from the side but not from the front. The top of the frame retains the original keeps for hanging rings but it has been strung with wire and hanging rings on the back at a later point in time.Measures 15 1/2" x 12" (sight size) and 21" x 17 1/2" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF. ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
