MID 19TH CENTURY FLORAL SPRAY, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY JANE MILNES AGED 11 1845

Mid 19th century sampler by Jane Milnes aged 11 - 1845. Worked in wool on a soft cotton canvas, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the canvas is stitched with the following verse which has a rose basket to the left and a flower basket and tree to the right

The middle section of the canvas is stitched with a large central floral spray with two birds above, each bird with a diamond motif at their side which contains a flower basket and has a flower basket beneath. The lower section of the canvas is stitched with a central floral garland which contains Jane's name, her age and the date of 1845. The garland is flanked by a fruit basket and carnation and rose bowl. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep rosebud border.The canvas has overall, quite brown discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some patches of faint staining. There is also a light crease running across the middle. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are a few areas of damage to the canvas, some having resulted in some stitch loss. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The photographs also show the sampler retains its original edging cloth and also visible tack marks around the edges of the canvas from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.PLEASE NOTE - This is a fairly large sampler measuring 24 1/2" x 28"
