Mid 19th century sampler by A.E.Williams aged 18 - 1856. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The main body of the gauze is stitched with the following biblical quotation with A.E.Williams' details and the date of 1856 to finish
Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youthWhile the evil days come not nor the years draw nighWhen thou shalt say I have no pleasure in themEccles. Chap.12 Ver.1A.E.Williams aged 18 1856
The... first line of the quotation has two floral motifs to the left and a crown and three flower pots to the right, whilst the right side is stitched with a flower basket and bird. The left side of the quotation is stitched with a flower basket and floral urn with a colourful bird standing on a perch beneath them. The date of 1856 has floral motifs, a bird, diamond motifs and crowns around it then the whole piece is surrounded by a red undulating border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker down the middle with the odd faint mark here and there, and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when A.E first stitched it. Measures 16" x 12"
