Virtue's the chiefest beauty of the mindThe nobler ornament of human kindVirtue's our safeguard and our guiding starThat stirs up reason when our senses err~~~~~~From my beginning may the almighty powersBlessings bestow in never ceasing showersOh may I happy be and always blestOf every joy, of every wish posses'dMay plenty dissipate all worldly caresAnd smiling peace bless my revolving years~~~~~~On mortalityFrom stately palaces we must removeThe narrow lodging of a grave to proveLeave the fair train and the light gilded roomTo lie alone benighted in the tombGod only is immortal: man not soLife to paid upon demand we owe
Marther's details and the following advice are stitched beneath the verses - Marther Maybrick, If thou wilt heaven win. Fear God and flee from sin. Apr 22 1774 - then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep carnation border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with general grubbiness and speckled staining throughout. The colours of the silks are good with the stitch loss and thinning mentioned earlier. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Marther first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage in the bottom carnation border and further, more extensive damage around the edges of the linen. Measures 11 3/4" x 13 1/2"
