Original Description:
Mid/late 19th century sampler by Mary Wilson aged 8. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Mary was just eight years old when she completed it. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section is stitched with a deep st...ylised floral border with the following short verse beneath
Attend ye young who happy liveBeneath a parent's eyeTo them returns of duty giveWho all your wants supply
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral motif which has a bird and crown on each side and Mary's name and age beneath. Mary's details have a bird and tree to their left and right then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep strawberry border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good, with some shades having mellowed more than others over the years and the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Mary first stitched it. Measures 14 1/2" x 19"
