T G & F Booth - C1885 - Brown Floral Swirls - Antique Hand Painted Tile
Item History & Price
"Brown Floral Swirls"
-- Victorian * Transfer Printed * Hand-Tinted * Poly-Chrome --
A beautiful, Victorian era, Aesthetic Movement, tile, featuring swirling floral designs, springing from classical pediments, which surround a central, abstract flower motif. This design is accented with amber and white tints and is placed upon a pale green ground. Created using heat resistant green clay, this tile was manufactured by T. G. &am...p; F. Booth, circa 1885.
Condition: Excellent The tile displays two upper corners, which were deliberately reduced to allow the passage of small, brass, wood screws, used to hold a dime sized brass washers, which held this tile in place within a back splash of an antique wash stand. This is not considered to be "damage, " as this reduction is contemporary to this tile's original installation and deliberately caused by the installer. However, this reduction is considered to be a defect, keeping this tile from being as perfect as those tiles without it.
The verso displays the characteristic grip pattern for Booth. The absence of an embossed "ENGLAND" on the verso indicates this tile predates 1891, when Booth included it to comply with an American tariff law. Booth never put their name and address on their biscuits, as they sold blanks to tile decorators and this would lead to confusion. So, they would stamp their tiles, if they wished to mark them with a registration number, pattern number, or the company name.
