T G & F Booth - C1895 - White Lily - Antique Aesthetic Movement Fireplace Tile
Item History & Price
"White Lily Floral"
-- Aesthetic Movement * Majolica * Sculpted Relief * Poly-Chrome Glaze --
"The white lily symbolized several attributes during Victorian times. The white lily stood for virginity, and purity, as well asmajesty. It is also the flower, when given, which says - 'it’s heavenly to be with you'."
A simply fabulous, molded majolica, floral tile, created by T. G. & F. Booth, of England, featuring a large White... Lily flower head, in glorious bloom, surrounded by long, wavy, green leaves, all floating upon a square patterned, brown, ground.
This antique tile is expertly manufactured and displays careful attention to its sculpting and decoration. It was not easy to keep the molten glazes from running, reacting, and mixing on a tile with this many colors, and where color blending is seen, as with the yellow and pale blue glazes on the flower's petals. Very well done! This tile was once a part of an English fireplace surround set, which originally included ten (10) tiles, five tiles to a side, which displayed a plant of white lilies growing up from a ceramic sculpted pot. Basically, the set included two lily floral murals with four blossoms each, one for each side of the firebox. I have provided a picture of the entire fireplace surround, which this tile is from.If you already own this fireplace surround, and one of your tiles is damaged, or worn, you may replace it with this tile.
Thankfully, since the design uses a flower head so large, a single tile from this set, such as this one, is able to stand on its own, as one can easily see.
Condition: Excellent.
The typical crazing found on such brilliantly glazed antique fireplace tiles is very faint and hard to see.
The verso displays a seven bar grip pattern known to be used by at least four manufacturers, including T.G.&F of Booth, who used this grip design c1885-c1903. The verso is in good condition, but a bit grubby from a hundred years of soot.
Please examine the provided high-resolution scans of this tile, an a photograph, to observe the exact state of this tile.
