LONDON 1616 & 1890Panoramic Birds-Eye Views
- Made in 1890 -* * * * * * * * * * * This is an awesome illustrated map of the city of London as seen at two points in its history, 1616 (the year when Shakespeare died) and 1890 (the year this was made). Highly detailed birds-eye views of the city at those two points in time are laid out, one above the other, on a huge double-engraving almost four feet wide (45 inches by 16 inches...). Dozens of landmarks are identified on the 1616 map, and both maps are engraved in incredible detail.
This was published in 1890 as a special four page fold-out Supplement to Harper's Weekly, and this format resulted in a great many of these being damaged or destroyed beyond repair (through folding and unfolding, but even more through the page trimming that was part of various binding techniques). The birds-eye map offered here suffered some damage as well. As can be seen in the second picture above, there is a piece missing (about the size of a 50-cent coin) at the very bottom of this map, with the loss of engraved area measuring about an inch by an inch an a half. In addition, there is visible fold wear along several folds, and one has three tiny binding holes.
The price for this panoramic illustrated map has been reduced greatly from what I normally would have asked for an item like this, but although this huge engraving has some defects, it is still an awesome piece and can be a dramatic display piece.
This is an original - it was made 129 years ago and is authentic, not a reproduction of any kind!
