Original Description:
This early hand forge cresset was used for light, a torch. The wrought iron "Basket" at the top was used by filling it with oil, pitch, a rope steeped in rosin or something else flammable.
Found here on Long Island where cressets were used to spear fish at night for eels and flounder. About 17 inches tall and weighs a hefty 3 lbs. Excellent condition with a nice old crusty finish.
