Be sure to have a look at our other items!This clock is probably about 75 years old but it's one of the nicest older cuckoo clocks I've seen in recent years! It is large, deeply hand carved, and plays music at the top of each hour. This is a Hunters-theme cuckoo clock that was created in Bischofswiesen "Germany" wh...en it was called the "US Zone" back in the 1940's. The clock was originally carved just on the outskirts of Berchtesgaden by "Bachmaier and Klemmer, " one of the finest clock makers in this region of the world. They were very quick to organize shortly after WWII and their factory is still there to this day. It is a most impressive clock and equally so in size too measuring about 16 1/2" or so high(from the tip of the wooden antlers to the bottom of the game bag and not counting the weights or pendulum), about 9 1/2" at its deepest point, and about 11 1/2" across the top. The clock is carved from cured and aged Lindenwood which has been the preferred wood of carvers in the Black Forest since the 1870's. The case front is adorned with ten, large carved oak leaves and another oak leaf is found on the wooden pendulum. The carvings are exceptional, deep, intricate, and wavy which deeply accentuates the rare dark walnut and color finish; very nice! A carved wooden game bag complete with straps is found near the bottom, a carved wooden game bird is mounted on the right side ofthe dial and an equally impressive, carved wooden rabbit sets on the left side. The top is a separate piece that is attached to the case. It is equally magnificent and features a large deer head completewith antlers and two wooden shotguns criss-crossed underneath. I don't think the deer head and antlers are wood but they sure look real! The dial has a black backdrop and features raised white Roman numerals to mark the hours and fancymatching hands to point out the time. There is a wooden Alp horn encircling the dial complete with a wooden mouthpiece and wood horn end. There is a wooden back attached to the back which removes to allow access to the weight driven mechanical movement inside the case created by "Regula." The door is marked "Made in Germany, US Zone" and it is also marked with the "Bachmaier and Klemmer" name. A weight drivenmovement simply means that the chains need to be pulled occasionally to windthe clock, music, and cuckoo activities. The wooden bellow tubes are in goodshape and the tops look and sound good too! At the bottom of each hour, a colorful bird opens the small door to the right above the dial and stands in thedoorway. He gives off a single cuckoo sound in tandem with a coiled cathedral chime before retreating back inside the clock, closing the doorbehind him. The bird appears again at the top of the hour and correctly cuckoos and chimes the current number of hours before he retreats to the confines of the inner clock and closing the door. Once he is safely inside, the small wooden door to the left above the dial opens and a colorful Bavarian man appears holding a zither in his lap. At that time, a "Swiss Thorens" music box inside the case plays a heavenly rendition of The "Wiener Blut Waltz, " one of the liveliest and most loved and recognized tunes ever created. Once the song is over, the man returns to the safe confines of the clock and closes the door; absolutely fascinating! There is an intact label on the lower right side of the clock identifying the song title, country of origin, and Thorens manufacture. The clock does work quite well here, keeps good time, cuckoosas it should, and the music is quite nice too! Keep in mind that even though it looks quite new, this is an old clock so some adjustments or service may benecessary once the clock arrives at its new home. The clock does appear to have been maintained some over the years but we do nonetheless recommend that the clock be serviced at least once every three years to keep it running strong. The clock comes complete as shown with three setsof attached metal chains, a wooden oak leaf pendulum, and three heavypinecone shaped metal weights. I've looked the clock over fairly well andcan't find any real signs of use, damage, or missing parts; beautiful patina and absolutely gorgeous on display! This clock is just stunning and a great nostalgic look back at the greatness ofBlack Forest workmanship. It iscertain to turn a few heads when displayed in your home, office, orwherever it is that you care to showcase an unusual, musical, hand carved cuckoo clock with a real history behind it.
