Offered for your consideration is a fine vintage F. Dick professional-grade 14" sharpening steel. F. Dick is one of Germany's finest makers and they're widely regarded as one of the finest professional-grade culinary brands in the world. The quality is comparable to two of the world's finest brands in J.A. Henckels and Wusthof. However, unlike Henckels and Wusthof, F. Dick made only professional-grade cutlery and did not market block set knives to home consumers. Their steels have been... trusted for the finest in edge maintenance for well over a century now. Though in today's world steels are marketed primarily for use on culinary knives, they're also very well-suited for sporting knives. Anyone who frequently fillets fish or processes their own game and/or livestock would be exceptionally well-served by having a quality steel handy at the cleaning/butchering station.
This is a pre WWII "slick" steel that's just over 1/2" thick at the base. The smooth surfaces on this type of steel will not remove metal from a fine blade. The steel simply serves to re-set the correct bevel and will not damage blades.
The steel has seen moderate use and remains in nice condition with no problems. It has not been buffed, polished, or refurbished and remains completely original.
This steel was beautifully crafted and offers full measures of the fine quality and performance that built Dick's reputation. It has a classic look all the way around and it would prove well-suited for either use or display. The steel is free of any significant corrosion or pitting with just some scattered small spots of the usual fine surface peppering as shown. It's free of any nicks, dings, snags, or dents and blades glide smoothly over the surfaces. The markings remain fully visible and bold with the arrow pointing towards the handle. The brass ferrule remains rock-solid and completely tight. It's free of any splits, dents, marring, or damage with just scattered blade contact marks from normal use as shown. The handle is of turned hardwood and it remains rock-solid as well. It's free of any cracks, chips, or damage with just light dings/dents around the edges from normal use/handling as shown. The handle offers a firm, comfortable grip and the wood is very nicely aged. Traces of the original black finish remain visible in the protected areas. The wood is completely free of dishwasher exposure with no water damage or any other environmental damage. The handle features a thick, heavy-duty brass hanging ring that's also free of damage and the brass is nicely aged as well.
The steel measures just over 19-3/4" in overall length (including the ring).
