Trent Tile Co., dating from the 19th century, and located in Philadelphia, PA, made some of the finest of American made fireplace majolica tiles, and the figural ones are the best and most desirable. It is extremely rare to find a complete set of five of these figural tiles, and these 5 comprise a set depicting a tree full of birds with the appropriate branch and leaf decoration. The very bottom tile portrays a large insect, I believe, which is the prey of the bird in the 2...nd tile up who is diving toward it. This is an outstanding full panel of one side of a 19th century fireplace in a late 1800s Denver mansion.
I would frame them if I were keeping them any longer; I have had them for 30 plus years and took them out of a Denver Square home that was slated to be demolished. It was built in 1890. I will soon have others for sale from the same house if you care to check out my other listings. Though I can't find the Trent Co. mark, I am relatively sure that they were made by Trent; there is still a light and thin residue of old mortar adhering to the backs obscuring any marks.
Each tile is 6 inches square and they all have very light crazing, lighter than I would expect of majolica, expected of lead-based high glazed majolica pottery. The middle tile has a corner that was broken at one time and glued back together, not an uncommon thing with majolica tiles. Since there are 5 in the set, that would make them 30 inches tall as a completed portrait. And the colors are consistent and lovely to be sure, comprising shades of brown, green, cream, and a pinkish undertone.The overall effect is amazing and the condition is too.
