Small late 19th century sampler by Annie Squire - 1887. Worked in a cotton thread on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains Annie's name, the level of her work - Standard III - and the date of 1887 which has a goblet/wine glass to the left and right. The gauze has overall discolouration consisten...t with its age, slightly darker in places with a faint line running down the centre. The colours of the thread have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Annie first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of paper around the edges of the gauze from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. As can also be seen from the photographs, the M and part of the N in the second row of letters are brighter than the rest of the row. However, the stitching is consistent with that of the rest of the piece so I am assuming that this work is also by Annie.Measures 8" x 11 1/2" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
