Very rare and original, 1860's Sixth Plate Cased Ambrotype Photograph of a Civil War Union Soldier in uniform. This original Ambrotype Photo measures approx. 2 5/8” by 3 1/8" (1/6 plate size) and is housed in what appears to be its original, pressed leather covered hard case (size of case is 3 1/8” by 3 5/8”).
The Ambrotype is a ½ length, seated portrait of a young, Soldier wearing an enlisted man's frock coat and holding a forage cap on his lap with ...his left hand. Neither the Soldier nor the Photographer are identified in any way.
This original, 1860's Sixth Plate Ambrotype Photo is in very good condition. The Image exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. The surface is sound and stable and generally well preserved with some light, horizontal wipes and some haloing and clouding at the matt opening. The pressed leather hard case is split at the spine and has leather loss at the side panels and some wear as can be seen in the scans below.
