RARE PIECE OF HISTORY, BEING A WELL WORN BUT FOLKY LEATHER-WRAPPED COLONIAL ERA HOLY B...IBLE WITH REV. OSTERVCALD'S OBSERVATIONS AND NOTES, AS WELL AS MAPS, PLATES AND MORE. THE BIBLE RETYAINS ITS ORIGINAL BINDING OF REVERSE CALF LEATHER WITH GILT RULED RAISED BANDS AND A GILT TITLE LABEL TO THE SPINE, THE WHOLE WRAPPED IN A DEERSKIN HAND-TIED LEATHER WRAP, REMOVED SOME TIME AGO BUT WITH THE BIBLE, AS SHOWN.
A GREAT CONVERSATION PIECE AND PRIMITIVE AESTHETIC MAKE THIS A GREAT ANTIQUE DECORATIVE ITEM, AS WELL AS A RELIGIOUS ANTIQUE FROM THE BEGINNINGS OF OUR GREAT NATION--- FOUND IN A COLONIAL AUCTION WITH OTHER EARLY AMERICAN ITEMS NEAR PHILADELPHIA IN 2012, IT CERTAINLY COULD HAVE BEEN A FRONTIER FAMILY BIBLE IN THE LATE 1700S!
Scarce family Bible has the boards and spine as one piece although the text block has broken at numerous places in the gutter with many pages detached, damaged, fragmented and worn down, heavily stained throughout with both title pages missing. The Bible is IDd by the inclusion of the Practical Notes and Observations of Ostervald, the name of the engraver (Scott), as well as the signatures, the NT ending at 14M, followed by a single letter signature of Psalms at the end. Illustrated plates throughout, as well as folding maps, all heavily worn and stained, damaged, etc. No names inscribed but 1787 is written twice in the front on the verso of a few maps, possibly indicating the date of the book. Incomplete and worn, sold as an aesthetic find! Measures roughly 11" x 9" x 5.5". Good luck!
