Civil War Soldier Lookup on US Government website shows the name of the signature in back of book as serving in the Confederacy 58th Regiment Virginia Infantry. The prayer book measurements are 4.75” x 3”. It has a hard cover with a good binding. Photos show age and condition issues which appear to be limited to scuffs and stains/stainin...g throughout. Thanks so much! •••SPECIAL NOTE•••Interesting to note; the soldier/owner of this prayer book has underlined certain prayers presumably ones that had special meaning to him.(photos 8 & 9) It gives some tiny insight as to who this person was and what gave him comfort while away at war. One prayer underlined says in part “My Lord and my God, I now live, but I know not how long my life will continue; I am convinced that I must die, but how, where, and when, I know not.....” As the civil war author and historian SHELBY FOOTE once said while speaking of the civil war soldier and his mindset regarding fear and being heroic, “It wasn’t all grit and valor.” To me that means the 1860’s soldier was much like all of us. Sometimes we’re feeling courageous and other times we are afraid and wish we were home. This is truly a great piece for any collection.GOOD LUCK!
