Reader, when I started her I had no clue. But somewhere in that sewing room it occurred to me that I needed to be realistic. Despite my best efforts, I'm very slow at what I do. You know what's not slow? TIME. It marches on, month after month. This is not goodbye, it can't be! I still have fabric! The silly thing is, I don't even have a job yet. I may come slinking back in a week or two saying, "Um, hello! Well, this is awkward..." In the meantime, real world, here I come! And whe...n I get my feet firmly planted beneath me Hazel Twigg will ride again, just not as frequently. But for now...Meet Marigold!The Last of "The Mains"No. 128 Marigold is an unmarked composition doll measuring just over 15". To me she looks like a composition precursor to the hard plastic Horsman Cindy.Mari (as we call her) arrived needing a cleaning and both sides of her hair were split. Also, her auburn wig was badly matted. But she had pretty brown eyes and was otherwise in great shape.My philosophy is to do as little as possible to these girls. Mend them, clean them, and dress them up so that they can last and be loved for another lifetime without losing the signs that they were Once-Loved before. Do not look for airbrushed perfection here!I repaired the sides of Mari's head, gave her a good cleaning, washed her wig and made it slightly less matted. Ahem. As you can see in some of the pictures, she has some craze lines still that were a little deeper than light. They remain.THE CLOTHES:THE COAT: I found this horrid wide wale corduroy in a shade I called "dirty pumpkin." When I decided to use it for Mari I described it to anyone who would listen as "beautifully ugly" and the like, because it's so very, very soft and I would make an inside-out robe for myself with it if I had enough. Once I made coat out of it and put it on Mari, I realized the color was more of a cinnamon than anything else, and I felt silly for misjudging the color. It even kind of looks like a mink coat! Mari loves it, and now that the weather has gotten chillier, she really doesn't want to take it off.THE DRESS: I honed in on my past quilt piecing skills (just kidding. I was actually pretty terrible at it) and made this pieced black and cream drop-waist dress. The cream was actually white, I dyed the fabric in just a little bit of McCormick curry spice. The bottle is at least 20 or 30 years old, so luckily she doesn't reek of curry. The HAT is made from the same fabric as the dress and is decorated with the very last of my favorite ever striped ribbon. I bought it many, many moons ago in a grab bag of ribbon at Walmart. Maybe at the same time I bought that curry spice! I've searched for it since to no avail. It seems fitting to give it to Mari.COSTUME: A simple Pierrot costume consisting of a cream clownish top and pointy hat with black pom-poms. The pom-poms are black faux fur sewn over wooden beads. ACCESSORIES: Mari has long striped STOCKINGS to wear with her costume, a PUMPKIN for trick-or-treating, two tone beige and black leather SHOES with suede soles, a long "pearl" NECKLACE that hooks in back, a BROOCH for her coat, and of course undies.OH MY GOODNESS, READER!! Don't think I haven't shed tears over this decision! It will be a blip in your life, but for me it's momentous. Regardless, I hope that when you next see a Hazel Twigg doll you will stop in and take a look, say hello and keep in touch, because lurker or frequent adopter I consider you all friends, and I will miss you.
