As you know, I cannot let a summer pass without doing a patriotic doll! I was looking through my folder of ideas, when my wee little sister Julie piped up."It's the 100 year anniversary of women getting the vote in America!"Voting! What could be more patriotic than that?Meet Georgette!The Stalwart Women's SuffragetteHazel Twigg No. 130 is an 18" Arranbee (R&B) Nanette. She shall from heretofore be known as Georgette. Georgette is here to commemorate the 100th ANNIVERSARY of the pas...sing of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote!Georgette arrived in fairly good shape. She desperately needed a cleaning and her original wig was that sparse looking school-marm kind. She had sizable chunks missing from her right armpit, right fingers, and right foot. Must have been a one-sided fight! Har.My philosophy is to do as little as possible to these girls. Mend them, clean them, and dress them up so that they can last and be loved for another lifetime without losing the signs that they were Once-Loved before. Do not look for airbrushed perfection here!I gave Georgette a thorough cleaning and repaired her armpit, fingers and toes with epoxy. If you look closely, you'll see I haven't painted her repairs yet. One Does Not Do Repairs Just Before Sewing An All White Outfit, I have decided.Normally, I like to stick with original wigs. I was going to make the one she arrived in work with perhaps some supplemental mohair and some strategic fluffing. But as I got more and more detailed with all of her clothing, I decided not to waste time and searched my stash. I found this GORGEOUS newer mohair wig. It's nice and full with soft, blonde curls.As for her clothes, I've been chided by more than a few people for making too many clothes for each doll. TRUE!! Georgette would have just one outfit, I decided...BUT!! Boy, were her underclothes going to be good!COMBINATION: Made with delicate white cotton lawn and laced with a silk ribbon. Vintage/antique lace, fitted waist, snaps in back.CORSET: This was especially fun. I used 100% silk in pale blue for the outer covering. There's a thick layer of material sandwiched in between that and some comfy gold cotton lining. IDEA ALERT: Zip ties used for boning (!). Antique lace, vintage trim, grommets in back and laces with vintage rayon seam binding. Has "girdle" straps for her black STOCKINGS, which have corresponding snaps.BLOUSE: Simple sleeveless shell type with single snap at throat. I didn't want to add more bulk with more snaps. I notice that some of the hide glue I used to attach her wig dripped onto the collar of her blouse. This is why I rarely work in white! I cannot be trusted! Hard to see, I swear. Little black tie snaps in back.PETTICOAT: White cotton with a full ruffle and old lace from a hankie. There was a pretty label on this hankie that read, "Georgette Nauret." I looked and couldn't find a manufacturer with this name, I think it was just someone who liked to sew. The whole hankie as hand sewn. I sewed the little label into the back of Georgette's jacket.JACKET AND SKIRT: 100% linen, both fully lined. Both double "breasted" (hipped?). Based on a costume from a very popular movie. Sparkly buttons. Costume jewelry earring "broach."BOOTS: Spectator style in slightly deeper cream color linen and black leather. No worries about lacing them each time, they snap and hook in back!HAIR: Can be easily styled up or down with an included comb. Why, with a little effort, you can make her hair every bit as messy as I have! HAT: Made with various materials with findings from an older corset for decor and cream and black striped ribbon. Decorated with an ostrich feather that moves with the slightest breeze. Wire brim for easy styling, fully lined crown.SASH: "Votes for Women" hand embroidered free-style (can you guess?!) fastens with enameled stars and stripes broach.FLAG: Julie and I found a stash at a thrift store last summer!! Nice older ones! I'll be doing patriotic dolls for YEARS to come...Held upright with old wooden spool and chipboard cut out. 21" tall.I'll include tips for dressing and undressing Georgette. You can certainly see the need for a lady's maid back then!I had some amazing inspiration for this in every layer of this girl's clothing. Her blog post is going to be titled, "Soldiers in Petticoats." Without looking, can YOU guess what very popular movie that's a lyric from?!
