I can't always be in the living room when a new O.L.D. (Once-Loved Doll) arrives. I was currently in the kitchen at the crucial moment when the noodles for the mac and cheese I was making for our supper needed to be drained. I am nothing if not an accomplished cook, and the house dolls and Hazel loved this particular feasting extravaganza. I was hastily adding the butter and cheese powder to the pot so I could meet our new arrival when the strains of Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" reach...ed my ears. Dot and Betty slowly entered the kitchen behind a sweet Anne Shirley in what could only be called a procession."Ooh, a bride!" I exclaimed. With my previous doll, I had learned that it's not always a bad thing to use a new arrival's existing clothes for a theme."We can make a veil for you and a lovely bouquet...""If you please, " the new girl said softly, "I've been a bride forever. I'd like to perhaps...kick my heels up a little bit...?"Meet Marilyn! The Girl Who Is No Longer Always A BrideO.L.D. (Once-Loved Doll) No. 123 is an 18" composition Anne Shirley. She was sent to me by way of my dear friend, who thought I might be able to find her and some of her friends a new home.Marilyn arrived in remarkably good shape. All her fingers and everything! There was a little crack on the side of her neck and she needed a gentle cleaning and little lip touch up. Her wedding gown is nice enough with a crisp white slip beneath it. My philosophy is to do as little as possible to these girls. Mend them, clean them, and dress them up so that they can last and be loved for another lifetime without losing the signs that they were Once-Loved before. Do not look for airbrushed perfection here!I repaired her crack, gave her a cleaning, washed her wig and touched up her lips. Voila! That was easy. On with the clothes!DRESS: I have been a beading FOOL these past few weeks. Those beads are SECURE. They're all glass in shiny black and gunmetal gray. For good measure, there are three strands of beads that go shoulder to shoulder at her back. Fringed skirt (of course!).COAT: I wish I could capture how nifty this fabric is. It's a velvet with a pattern woven in. Ruched velvet collar and black glass Victorian buttons. Single snap in front, fully lined, decorated with a red velvet poppy flower. HEAD PIECE: Modified rhinestone necklace on gold 100% silk fabric over a chipboard base. Further decorated with an old rhinestone screw earring with the screw part broken off. GLOVES: Long and attach via middle finger loop. Made from my son's old middle school gym shorts. Yes, I washed them. In the boonies, One Uses What One Has.BRACELET: From an old crystal bracelet. Beads strung on with elastic for easy on and off.SHOES: Red suede leather in a "T" strap style, popular to Flappers. Button heels. They're a little high, but Marilyn INSISTED.She will also of course come with her wedding gown, in case she ever decides to settle down again. EVERYBODY needs a little flapper in their life!
