George A. Clark (18...24-1873) was born in Scotland and immigrated to America where he opened George A. Clark’s Thread Company in Newark, New Jersey. George Clark was a descendent of Peter Clark, inventor of cotton thread in 1806 — the year Napoleon blockaded Great Britain and prevented Peter Clark from importing silk for his thread making business. Peter Clark, undeterred, developed a way to replace silk with cotton, calling his invention OUR NEW THREAD — hence, the abbreviation O.N.T. on the cabinet’s second drawer. O.N.T. was the Clark Company’s advertising trademark throughout the 1800s.
