A very scarce wonderful condition delft tile painted in grayish cobalt-blue depicting the Temptation of Adam and Eve with the Serpent looking on, coiled around the apple tree; GEN. Ch. 3 v.1; circa 1720 - 1750
Tiles illustrating the biblical story of Adam and Eve are nowadays rare and desirable. This example is painted in dark, grayish-blue and depicts the scene from Genesis Chapter 3, Verse 1 which depicts the Temptation of Eve by the Serpent and the fall from grace o...f the hapless couple:
"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves"
The tile is beautifully made, measuring 5 1/8 inches square and 11/4 inch thick. There are a couple of surface glaze edge chips (see photograph #1 in the sequence provided) but there are no cracks and there is no restoration. This is a fabulous addition to any collection of Biblical tiles and a beautiful devotional item.
Good luck with your bid-we hope you win this fabulous tile!!
