A very rare and collectable delft tile painted in bright cobalt blue depicting the Temptation of Adam and Eve with the Serpent looking on, coiled around the apple tree; circa 1700 - 1720.
Tiles depicting Adam and Eve are nowadays rare and desirable and this example is in superb condition. It is painted in bright blue with the inscription GEN. 3. V. 4. (Genesis Chap. 3 verse 4). The scene shows the Temptation of Eve by the Serpent and the fall from grace of the hapless coup...le as described in Genesis 3 v. 4:
"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves"
The tile is beautifully made measuring 5 1/8 inches square and 5/8 inches thick. There is only normal historical wear - no chips or cracks of note and no restoration. This is a fabulous addition to any collection of Biblical tiles and a beautiful devotional item.
