A comprehensive record of the descendants of King James I, fr...om the late sixteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. First edition. Illustrated throughout with many portraits, including a tipped-in colour frontispiece to eachvolume. Founded by Robert II of Scotland, the Stewarts first became monarchs of the Kingdom of Scotland during the late 14th century, and subsequently held the position of the Kings of England, Ireland, and Great Britain. Their patrilineal ancestors (from Brittany) had held the office of High Steward of Scotland since the 12th century, after arriving by way of Norman England. The dynasty inherited further territory by the 17th century which covered the entire British Isles, including the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Ireland, also maintaining a claim to the Kingdom of France. Published almost 50 years ago, this edition is now long out of print and hard to find, and sets sell for hundreds of dollars.
From the introduction: "In the night of the 23rd/24th March, 1603, there lay dying at Richmond an old lady of 69, the last of her line, whose zest for life had passed. She grew worse because she would be so said her cousin, Sir Robert Carey, and as her life ebbed away word ws sent to Scotland summoning her cousin the King to London. At three o'clock in the morning Elizabeth I, the last Tudor Queen of England, died, and England and Scotland were united. The news reached Holyrood house on Saturday night the 26th of March: James VI, King of Scotland since he was one year old, was now king of England. This work is an attempt to trace out his descendants. The Stuarts were a gifted family and are believed to have originated in Normandy. Alan, son of Flaald, a Norman knight, obtained a grant of lands in Shropshire and it was his son Walter who went to Scotland, where he quickly made his mark. Appointed Stewart of Scotland, the office became vested in the family and in 1315 his namesake, Walter 6th High Steward of Scotland married Marjorie, daughter of King Robert the Bruce, and when in 1731 King Robert the Bruce's son David II died, it was his nephew Robert the Steward who succeeded him as King of Scotland..."
According to Wikipedia: "The House of Stuart, originally Stewart, was a European royal house that originated in Scotland. The dynasty's patrilineal Bretonancestors had held the office of High Steward of Scotland since the 12th century, after arriving by way of Norman England. The royal Stewart line was founded by Robert II, and they were Kings and Queens of Scots from the late 14th century until the union with England in 1707. Mary, Queen of Scots, was brought up in France, where she adopted the French spelling of the name, Stuart. Her son, James VI of Scotland, inherited the thrones of England and Ireland upon the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Except for the period of the Commonwealth, 1649–1660, the Stuarts were monarchs of the British Isles and its growing empire, until the death of Queen Anne in 1714... In total, nine Stewart/Stuart monarchs ruled Scotland alone from 1371 until 1603. James VI of Scotland then inherited the realms of Elizabeth I of England, becoming James I of England and Ireland in the Union of the Crowns. Following the Glorious Revolution in 1688, two Stuart queens ruled the isles: Mary II and Anne. Both were the Protestant daughters of James VII and II by his first wife. Their father had converted to Catholicism and his new wife gave birth to a son in 1688, who would be brought up a Roman Catholic and would precede his half-sisters; so James was deposed by Parliament in 1689, in favour of his daughters. But neither had any children who survived to adulthood, so under the terms of the Act of Settlement 1701 and the Act of Security 1704, the crown passed to the House of Hanover on the death of Queen Anne in 1714..."
