8vo. With illustrations, titles in red and black and numerous plates – lacking four plates to pages 157, 187, 262 and the frontispiece.Original red buckramupper board blocked and lettered in gilt. An uncommon and detailed account. Vol I - 528pp, Vol II - 547pp.Approximately 8 ¾ inchestall. ConditionReportExternallySpine – fair condition – gilt titles, gilt embossed emblem, very faded, bruised top and tail.Joints – good condition – sound, some fading.Corners – good condition – gently bumped.Boards – good condition – red boards, faded in places, gilt titles with gilt crest in the centre of the front board.Page edges – good condition – top edge gilt, foxing on front and bottom edge which are untrimmed.See above and photos.InternallyHinges – good condition – sound, starting to crack with the webbing showing in a small spot at the bottom of the front hinge of Vol I.Paste downs – good condition – tanned with some foxing, front paste down has had some text scribbled out in blue ink, Vol II has a hand written inscription to previous owner.End papers – good condition – tanned with foxing, rear end paper has a crease across it in Vol I.Pages – good condition – tanned and foxed throughout, a number of pages have the corners turned over in Vol I, a number of b/w plates throughout, there are some pencil marginalia and underlining throughout to Vol I.Binding – good condition – tightly bound.See photosPublisher: see above.
