I've been collecting for over 55 years and it is now time to let most of my personal collection go. This sword is a vet bring back item and was acquired many years ago in the U.S. I am listing several WW2 Japanese swords and they were all acquired from vets or their family. A word of note: I am not an expert on Japanese edged weapons or swords. These I kept simply because they came from the vet and in connecti...on with other articles I was looking for. All of the swords are EXACTLY like I found them. The only thing I did was remove the handle to show the tang for listing purposes. I use the eBay Global Shipping Program and overseas shipping costs will be included with the invoice you receive from them.Offered here is an original WW2 Japanese samurai-type sword. This sword is a Marine vet bring back item from the Saipan campaign and acquired in the U.S. The vet who brought it back was Corporal Elmer W. Broderson. Corporal Broderson served with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division on Saipan in 1944. I will be listing Corporal Broderson's green and dress blues at a later date. This sword is EXACTLY like I got it and nothing has been removed or messed with except the handle which was taken off to show the tang of the blade for listing purposes. The sword is 38 inches in total length and the blade is 26 1/2 inches long. The blade width is 1 1/4 inches at the hilt and tapers to 1 inch at the tip. As the photos show, the tang is rusted and there are Japanese characters embossed into the steel. while they looked painted in the photo, the characters look as if they had been inlayed into the steel. It does not look like a shortened sword to me. This Japanese sword has a lot of character. Clearly, the blade had been mounted with a more field adaptable handle and scabbard than some of the more ornate swords often found. I suppose practical would be the best description. The blade has been sharpened but is otherwise in fairly good condition. There appears to be a faint temper line. The wooden handle is banded with steel bands and has a steel end cap. The bands and caps are painted black with some wear to the paint. The wood in the handle has several small dings and is cracked along one side. The scabbard is wood and seems to be in solid shape except the metal throat piece is missing (or it never had one). The scabbard has a field sewn khaki canvas cover over it that is worn and soiled from use. Make no mistake, this sword has truly been there. I'm not sure what more I can add that the photos do not show. Please look at them carefully.This is an odd size to ship so the shipping costs reflect that.
