Mid 19th century sampler by Ann Bramall aged 12 - 1844. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. Ann has meticulously covered the background of her sampler with a background which was originally blue. At the centre is a grassy hillock surrounded by trees and shrubs. A youth is sitting on the hillock playing his pipe for a bird which hovers in the air beside him, wings outspread. Ann's details are stitched beneath this delightful sce...ne - Ann Bramall Work done at Parson Cross Shcooll (school) Aged 12 Years 1844 - then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep floral border.The gauze which is visible has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some damage and fraying around the edges. Several shades of the wool have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one.
