Mid/late 19th century needlepoint - c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of a young boy and girl sitting in a rural setting with flowers and trees around them. The girl is holding a tiny pup in her hands as its mother, possibly a poodle, stands nearby. The gauze has overall, dark discolouration consistent with its age with a few small areas of damage. I've photographed th...e needlepoint on a white background to highlight this but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable. The colours of the wool are good, albeit not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. There are also a few, very small, barely noticeable areas of damage in the stitching which have resulted in the odd stitch missing here and there. The last photo is of the reverse of the wool work and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze have been cut at some point of time which has resulted in some minor fraying.Measures 14" x 15" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
