Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:23707669 |
To my honour'd parentsOn this fair sampler does my needle write Both love and duty bid my heart inditeEach piece of work each finish'd line appearsTo shew improvement of my growing yearsAnd in these lines dear parents I impartThe fondest tenderest dictates of my heart
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a strip of grass which has a central fruit basket standing on it with Maria's details and the date of 1839 stitched to the left and right of its topmost fruit. There is a dog, tree and tree plus bird to each side of the fruit basket with a crown above each dog, then the whole piece is surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some small areas of faint speckled staining. The colours of the thread are good with some small areas of stitch loss to the black stitch work of the verse. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Maria first stitched it. Whilst it's difficult to see, this photo also shows remnants of what looks like wonderweb or something similar on the gauze. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a small area of damage to each corner of the gauze plus another in the left side border. I've photographed the sampler on a white background to highlight this, but once on a similar coloured backing the damage would be less noticeable.Measures 15" x 17 1/2"
