Early/mid 19th century sampler by Eliza Watkin aged 10 - 1838. Worked in wool on a soft cotton gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with Eliza's details, her place of residence - Newcastle - and the date of 1838 beneath the second row. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with further rows of alphabet letters with the XYZ at the centre of t...he bottom edge having a tree and flower basket on either side. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow floral border. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a light crease running down the centre. The colours of the thread are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Eliza first stitched it.
